Alan Geyer's current work is focused on the integration of musical styles, methods, or processes that are historically thought of as being in opposition, or from different musical worlds.  It is the tension between opposing aesthetics that generates the compositional fire and freshness that Geyer seeks. His most recent compositions combine serialism with play.

Geyer's "Bargain with a Flood of Moths," for cello quartet, is the result of integrating dodecaphony with rock and roll, and was premiered in 2023 by Quartetto Zuena at the highSCORE festival in Romanese, Italy. The piece has recently been recorded by cellist Jeremy Harman of the Sirius Quartet.

Geyer studies composition with Melinda Wagner and Justin Dello Joio.  He has been mentored by Amy Beth Kirsten, David Serkin Ludwig, Steven Mackey, Daniel Ott, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Dmitri Tymoczko.

As a pianist, he has performed nationally and internationally, most notably at the Gasteig in Munich, the Summer Music Academy of the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki, and at Atlanta's Rialto Center for the Arts.

He lives with his wife and daughter in Amherst, Mass.
